Discover the rainforest
Embark on an exciting expedition through the world’s largest indoor rainforest, home to around 50,000 plants and 600 different species. Discover mangroves that you can explore via a walkable bridge, as well as lush banana and jackfruit trees. The rainforest thrives indoors thanks to the UV-permeable roof covering the South Sea, which creates ideal conditions for natural growth.
The tropical rainforest at Tropical Islands is a biotope that is naturally kept in ecological balance by a host of micro-organisms and insects. They are all a welcome part of the ecosystem and play their part, for example by aerating the soil and breaking down the leaves lying on the ground in the planting beds into humus. This includes Pycnoscelus surinamensis, also known as the Surinam or greenhouse cockroach, which prefers to live in warm, damp areas of soil. For ecological reasons, we cannot do without our cockroaches and beetles, which are neither harmful nor dangerous. Please bear with us if you happen to come across one or two of these inhabitants outside their natural habitat.
